Formed in 1991, the band has charmed audiences around the Edmonton area with their passion for the 'Swing Era'. Originally named the Rural Route Swing Band, it was renamed in '2009' in memory of the founder 'Joe Saumer'. Joe's legacy is passed on through 3 of his sons, his oldest granddaughter and his youngest grandson, all who have been members.
Joe, who performed swing music since it's heyday in the '1940s', influenced not only his family but many fellow musicians in the North Central Alberta region. Band members are made up of all walks of life and travel near and far for rehearsals and gigs and all in the name of the music Joe so dearly wanted to see preserved.

KATELYN BOHN

OCCUPATION:
Grade 12 Student at Onoway High School
WHY DID YOU GET STARTED IN MUSIC:
I took piano lessons from grade two until
grade seven when I started playing trombone.
FONDEST MEMORY OF J.S.B.B.:
When I first heard them play at an Honours Band Coffeehouse. It sounded awesome and I wished that I could someday play in an ensemble that sounded that great.
HANNA DENTON
INSTRUMENT: Alto Sax
YEAR YOU STARTED WITH BAND: 2009
Student at Grant MacEwan University
It was a requirement to take music when I was in the 7th grade. Previous 7th graders had passed word along that the sax was the coolest instrument to play. Naturally, I chose the sax and it turns out that it is the coolest instrument after all.
FONDEST MEMORY OF J.S.B.B. :
We have alot of fun together. You can tell a group is really close when 18 year olds have inside jokes with 80 year olds!
CLAYTON DUBE

Tom Saumer, since my first band class in grade 7, has been a monumental influence on my musical development.
FONDEST MEMORY OF J.S.B.B.

WHY DID YOU GET STARTED IN MUSIC: I started music through Tom Saumer's music program in Onoway on clarinet. In grade 8.
I switched to saxophone and haven't looked back since.
My fondest memory is the New Years Eve gig in the Onoway Community Hall. We blew a breaker during the tune "Tammy". The band finished the piece by singing the lyrics.
MARC de MONTIGNY

OCCUPATION: Professor of Physics, U of A
I started music & saxophone in Grade 8 to follow my friends; I did not even know what a saxophone was!

WHY DID YOU GET STARTED IN MUSIC: Mr. David Thompson taught a few of us interested students to play in a recorder band in grade 6 where I played bass recorder. I was hooked from then on!
They are all fond memories, but possibly the most exciting for me was playing in the pit at both Jubilee Auditoriums (Edmonton and Calgary) for a Sweet Adeline Show.
